Since early 2012 I have been serving as one of two Public Safety Liaisons for the Dupont Circle ANC. Kishan Putta and I have been working with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia and MPD to follow up on arrests of individuals who have committed serious crimes in our neighborhood.

In August, MPD announced that they had made an arrest in a string of sexual assaults that occurred around Dupont. They charged the man, Oscar Mauricio Carnejo-Pena, with five counts of Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse. He plead guilty to those charges and residents had a short time to provide a Community Impact Statement to the judge to influence his sentencing. Kishan and I submitted the statement below that was accepted by the judge at sentencing:

Unfortunately, the judge sentenced Mr. Carnejo-Pena to 180 days of jail time for each count to be served concurrently, as opposed to consecutively. He was also sentenced to three years of probation, mental health counseling, and ordered to stay away from the victims and the Dupont Circle neighborhood.

We are extremely grateful for the hard work of MPD and the U.S. Attorney's Office in this case and I will keep working closely with them to track and influence serious crimes in our neighborhood.

Thank you to the residents of 2B09 for electing me your ANC Commissioner for the next two years. I am repeatedly humbled by the talented, accomplished, and friendly people who live in our neighborhood and I am honored to represent you all on the ANC. 

When I moved to the neighborhood, I was looking for a way to meet more of my neighbors and give back to the community that I call home. Over the last year, I've made great progress on both of those goals and I'm incredibly excited to continue that work as your Commissioner. My goals for the next two years are to make incremental progress in: 

• Making our neighborhood streets safer for pedestrians, bikers and drivers
• Finding community-based approaches to solving neighborhood issues
• Creating stronger relationships with DC government agencies so they better serve our needs

I cannot do it alone. I will depend on the entire community to help make our neighborhood an even better place to live, start a business, shop, raise a family, and call home.

Hey there and thanks for visiting this site dedicated to the residents, businesses and neighborhood of ANC 2B09 in Dupont Circle. Here I'll provide updates with information on upcoming meetings, events in the neighborhood, and post discussion topics. 

Our Commissioner since 2000, Ramon Estrada, has had a blog for several years and I've found his updates on neighborhood issues very helpful. I hope he continues to blog and I hope to add to the discussion through this site. 

Every post will include opportunities for folks to comment and discuss issues. Though nothing can replace face-to-face interaction, I hope that this site will help to inform and excite the neighborhood.
