Dupont ANC Adopts Resolution to Improve Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety

I began working with the ANC late last year because I wanted to meet more people in my neighborhood, but also to help out with some specific concerns I had about traffic safety in the area.

A few months ago, the Dupont and Logan ANCs hosted a second Public Safety Listening Session focusing on bicycle safety. We had almost 50 people attend who shared their concerns and ideas on how to improve safety for all road users. DDOT and MPD also attended to hear concerns and discuss improvements.

Pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular safety are closely connected, especially in an urban environment like ours. For example, work we do to ensure the safety of bicyclists on the roadway will help to reserve sidewalks for pedestrians. The 15th St. Cycle Track (pictured) is in horrible shape and in need of repair to attract bikers off of sidewalks. The listening session resulted in a resolution adopted by the Dupont ANC in November:

My fulltime work is with the Federal Government in highway safety and ambulance policy and I thought we should focus on some realistic and meaningful action items for the neighborhood and the city that improve on several of the "Four E's" of traffic safety (Engineering, Education, Enforcement, and Emergency Services). The resolution calls for the following:

  1. Modify the timing of pedestrian signals at the intersections of Dupont Circle in order to assure that pedestrians who follow the signals are not stranded on the median between two lanes of moving traffic.
  2. Repave and repaint the 15th St Cycle Track from U St. to H St. and add additional signage for drivers, bikers, and pedestrians making it more clear who has the right of way at all times.
  3. Better maintain the surface and visibility of all the bike lanes in the neighborhood to keep them attractive and safe options for bikers.
  4. Paint clearly visible symbols on the ground near or on the curb ramps at intersections on the northern border of the Downtown Business District indicating that it is against city regulation to bike on sidewalks.

We've already made significant progress as DDOT has initiated work orders on the first two action items. I'm looking forward to continuing the great dialogue on traffic safety in our neighborhood and working with more passionate people. If you have thoughts on how we can improve, leave a comment!
